IT’S IN THE BAG!!
Cell Membrane Transport
OBJECTIVE:
DEMONSTRATE an understanding of the movement of molecules across a cell membrane.
MATERIALS:
four candies 2 twist ties 1 plastic shopping bag a pair of scissors
PROCEDURE:
Your task is to get four candies into a plastic shopping bag. Sounds pretty easy, but here are a few rules that you must follow that make the task a little more of a challenge.
RULES:
· The four candies MUST enter the bag at the same time.
· The four candies MUST enter through the solid part of the bag (NOT the opening at the top).
· The internal environment of the bag must not be exposed to the external environment.
· When the candy finally enters the bag it must remain together in the form of a cluster.
· Do NOT eat the candy until you have completed the task and shown the solution to your teacher.
· Do NOT discuss any part of this activity with any other students in the class.
· Failure to follow any of these rules will result in a failing grade for this activity.
DESCRIBE the procedure you plan to follow according to the rules in order to get the candy in the bag. NUMBER each step.

ANALYSIS:
1. DEFINE, in your own words, the following terms:
a) passive transport-
b) active transport-
c)endocytosis-
d)exocytosis-
2. RELATE, citing details from the activity, the process that you went through to one of the cellular transport processes that you learned about (and defined above) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. LIST and DESCRIBE the two forms of endocystosis you learned about.

4. Which of the two above was the process in this activity?
5. If you cut a hole in the bag, what would this simulate in the cell?
