Bonds and Compounds
Problem
Create a poster that will classify compounds by their bond type. How can you
classify compounds by the type of bonds they contain?
Suggested Materials
periodic table poster board marking pens or pencils
Devise a Plan
1. On one half of your poster, make a data table like the one shown below. Give
yourself plenty of room for writing inside the boxes.
|
Name |
Formula |
Electron Dot Structure |
Ionic or Covalent compound |
Is it polar or non polar bonds |
Polar and Non polar molecules |

2. Complete the table for the following compounds: potassium iodide; carbon
dioxide; sodium oxide; calcium chloride; hydrogen chloride; carbon tetrafluoride
(CF4); methyl alcohol (CH3OH); acetic acid (CH3COOH); lithium nitride
(Li3N); and chlorine gas (Cl2). For each electron dot diagram, either label the
charges on the ions or circle the covalent bonds. The electron dot diagrams for
methyl alcohol and acetic acid are provided below. The last two columns of the
table will not need to be completed for ionic compounds. (Hint: Fluorine,
oxygen, and chlorine strongly attract electrons.)
