Tips That I Use In My Classroom With Kids On The Spectrum
1. Write the schedule on the board. Kids on the spectrum (as do most kids) do like things to be predictable and like to know ahead of time what is coming up
2. Keep Your Routine
3. Structure Your Class
4. Avoid items that maybe too distracting
5. When writing your lessons, keep in mind most of these kids are visual learners
6. Seat these kids away from disruptive students and usually close to you
7. Challenge these students! They are not stupid.
8. If disruptive, try to figure out why. Are they bored? Is there too much stimulation or not enough? Do they already know the material?
9. Remember the abstract is hard for these students to grasp. For example, what does "under" mean. Try to make abstract concepts visual.
10. Don't Treat Them Any Different Then Any other Students. Keep your expectations high and let them come to you. You do not come to them.
